Your time will be divided between the General Wards of Auckland hospital, Buchanan Rehabilitation Centre, Te Whetu Tawera, and Fraser McDonald Mental Health Unit.
Buchanan Rehabilitation Centre is a specialist 40 bed inpatient mental health rehabilitation service for adults aged from 18 to 65 years however the majority are under 30 years. It is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and is available to people who live in the Te Toka Tumai and Waitemata districts. The multi-disciplinary team, work alongside people in a therapeutic, recovery-oriented environment supporting their clinical and rehabilitation needs with the aim of re integration into the wider community. The length of stay ranges from six months to two years with the average being around one year. Buchanan Rehabilitation Centre is located in Pt Chevalier.
Te Whetu Tawera or “Evening Star” is an acute inpatient mental health unit for adults aged from 18 to 65 years. There are 58 beds over three wards:
Te Whetu Tawera operates 24 hours per day, 7 days a week and is a resource for adult mental health services working with individuals whose needs cannot be met in the community.
Fraser McDonald Mental Health Unit is for the elderly.
Care is provided by a multidisciplinary team which includes Psychiatrists, Mental Health Nurses, Psychologists, Occupational Therapists and Social Workers. Cultural support is provided for tangata whai i te ora and their whānau by a Kaumatua and Kai Atawhai.
The Interchurch Council for Hospital Chaplaincy (ICHC)
ICHC Is a collaboration of a broad range of churches, is committed to providing Christian Chaplains within Aotearoa New Zealand’s healthcare environment.
As Chaplain you will be part of multidisciplinary healthcare teams, working with other Chaplains across the hospital providing holistic care to all. You will gain experience and provide spiritual care to patients from every culture, life stage, denomination, faith-orientation, belief, ethnicity, gender, or sexual orientation.

Your knowledge and experience in a ministry of pastoral care in a health or in faith community leadership will be key to your success.
